Dash for the Duel
For the second consecutive season the best of Dells Duel One and Two will decide who is king of Mid-American Stock Car Series action at Wisconsin’s Showcase Track with the Hankscraft Inc. Dash for the Duel presented by Wintergreen Resort and Conference Center.
The ten-lap heat race pits the six drivers with the best average finishers and two wild cards against each other. Starting order will be based on the drivers’ average finish from both feature events. Mark Pluer and Bill Prietzel will lead the field to the green flag. Dells Duel Two winner Tyler Bauknecht will start alongside current MASCS point leader Lyle Nowak in the second row. Adam Bendzick and Scott Null will start in row three.
Wild Cards Selected
Wild card voting for the Dash for the Duel closed Saturday, Sept. 4 to determine the final two spots in the race. Tom McClintock topped voting with 88 votes. Brian Back finished second with 66 votes. Both will be granted a berth.
Jake Finney (34 votes), Mike Lichtfeld (32 votes), Jeremy Spoonmore (24 votes) and Jeremy Bloomberg (3 votes) will be eligible as alternates in that order.
Dash Bonuses
Hankscraft Inc. and Wintergreen Resort and Conference Center have provided extra perks to make sure the Dash for the Duel is more than just a heat race. Thanks to Hankscraft the Dash will pay more than twice that of a normal heat race. Hankscraft also donated to the September Showdown feature event which will now pay the winner an extra $150 and second and third-place an extra $50.
The winner of the Dash will also be given a voucher for two free meals at the Wintergreen Resort and Conference Center as well as a voucher for a free stay. Two more free stay vouchers will be given to drivers chosen at random in the event.
Points Get Shaken Up
Bill Prietzel’s DNF at Marshfield Motor Speedway threw MASCS standings into frenzy. With his second-place finish Lyle Nowak secured a six-point lead over race winner Brian Back. Nowak is on top of Mid-American standings for the first time since his win in the season opening event of 2006. Prietzel fell to third, but is only 21 points back. Leading rookie contender Tyler Bauknecht sits fourth 50 points out of the lead.
Breaking Into the Top Ten
The race to finish in the top ten of MASCS standings will be frantic as well. Bobby Gutknecht sits on the fringe with 585 markers. His nephew Ryan sits only three points back in 11th. Paige Decker is only 11 points behind Bobby Gutknecht in 12th and Jake Finney sits 35 points out of the tenth spot in 13th.
Bad News, Good News
With smoke and oil spewing out of Bill Prietzel’s machine at Marshfield, it seemed as though the engine had expired on his machine. However, upon further inspection, that was not the case.
Prietzel’s Web site reports he ran over debris on the track. The debris ripped off an oil line and cracked the bell housing. According to the Web site, Prietzel’s motor is ok and ready for action at DRP.
No Surprise in Time Trials
There was little doubt among drivers Brian Back would set fast time at Marshfield. Back has now set fast time in every Mid-American event that has awarded points for time trials. Ron Weyer set fast time at Road America in June and there was no qualifying at Dodge County. Back has set fast time in four of the last five Mid-Am races at DRP, including both times in 2010.
Bauknecht Making a Statement
In 2009 Justin Neisius had one of the best showings in MASCS history of any rookie contender. In 2010 Tyler Bauknecht is playing the role of super rookie. Bauknecht has recorded two consecutive top five finishes including his win in Dells Duel Part Two. He has finished outside of the top ten only once in Mid-American races awarding full points when he broke an axel and backed into the outside retaining wall at Grundy County Speedway in May.
Roadhog Racing Back in Full Force
After two races off following his fourth place finish at Norway, Travis Rodewald will return to Mid-Am action at DRP – with a teammate. Don Wood will pilot the second Roadhog Racing entry. Wood will make his first appearance in a Mid-Am event since June 28, 2008 at 141 Speedway.
Swan Wins a Championship
One day after Marshfield, James Swan locked up his second Midwest Sportsman championship at Slinger Speedway. Displaying his dominance with another feature win, Swan claimed the title with two weeks remaining in the season.
After Dells Raceway Park…
Mid-American makes its first appearance of the season at Madison International Speedway for the Capitol Classic on Saturday, Sept. 25. Jeremy Spoonmore won the most recent MASCS event at Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-mile, claiming the Split 50 on Aug 28, 2009.
